Rise & Shine Sharing

Leading movement, music and multi-sensory play with PMLD participants

Join the Northern Ballet Learning team as we share our learnings from Rise & Shine.

Rise & Shine is a pilot project using movement, music and multi-sensory play with young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD).

Over three years we have worked in 3 Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) schools to develop pedagogy to impact physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

Read the Rise & Shine: Pupil Impact Executive Summary to find out more about the project.

Sessions will focus on:

  • Practical sessions where our artists share the newly developed pedagogy using movement, music and multi-sensory play for PMLD young people
  • Strategies for facilitating pupil choice with PMLD young people
  • Facilitated discussion on inclusive dance and accessibility in ballet
  • Supporting artists with lived experience of disability (learning disability and/or neurodivergence) to be dance leaders, facilitated by BLINK Dance
  • Methodologies for feedback and evaluation, including techniques for interviewing PMLD pupils, led by Dr Louise McDowall, Rise & Shine evaluator

You will be asked to make a selection of sessions on your registration form. There will be options to join practical sessions as well as discussion/presentation based sessions.

  • You may work with PMLD young people, or adults, or those with other complex disabilities
  • Music or dance therapists
  • Staff working in SEND schools or with SEND pupils in mainstream schools, including teachers and teaching assistants
  • Producers, project managers and anyone that plans and manages work in SEND settings or inclusive engagement
  • Anyone working in ballet or classical dance who want to explore ways to increase disability inclusion
  • Participatory arts evaluators who want to make their processes more inclusive
  • This list is not exhaustive and we welcome anyone who is interested in finding out more
